How To Install “Virtual Call Tracking” Script Using Google Tag Manager (GTM)
Step 1
Log in to Google Tag Manager, select your account to reveal your GTM workspace (dashboard), and click on the New Tag section.
Step 2
Name your tag Virtual Call Tracking and click on the Tag Configuration section. This will then reveal the Choose Tag Type window.
Step 3
Scroll down through the Choose Tag Type window and select Custom HTML tag.
Step 4
In the blank text box, copy and paste your Virtual Call Tracking script we sent to you. Next, scroll down to reveal the Triggering section.
Step 5
We want the Call Tracking script to fire on every page of your website to ensure
- any embedded phone numbers (both currently on your website and added in the future) are swapped out for our tracking number,
- we capture data on every page of your website, no matter which page a visitor might land on.
The Trigger for your tag determines when you tag is to be fired on your website. Click on the Triggering configuration section to reveal the set-up window.
Step 6
We want the tag to gather data from all the pages on your website, click the All Pages option. Once All Pages is selected the window will automatically divert back to your main GTM workspace.
Step 7
Press blue Submit button in top right hand corner of your GTM workspace to begin publishing your tag (meaning GTM will paste your script onto every page of your website). This will then reveal a Submit Changes screen where you can add notes to your tag should you want to.
Step 8
Next, Press the blue Publish button to paste your script to your website.
